Trust develops when there is equal participation and an openness to listen to and hear what the other person is all about. In a trusting environment, everyone is allowed to speak their minds freely in a respectful manner. When trust is present, it creates a safe space for the development of self-respect and mutual respect (Booth 2011 in Embracing diversity through multi-level teaching: Mirna Nel & Anna Hugo).
