Inclusion refers to the intentional, ongoing effort to ensure that diverse people with different identities are able to fully participate in education in a way that suits their personal characteristics and for them to feel connected. An important aspect of inclusion is the feeling of being part of a greater whole-regardless of individual characteristics = Sense of belonging (PXL University College). From a ‘culture’ perspective, inclusion refers to creating environments where people from diverse cultural backgrounds feel respected, heard, valued, and included. It involves acknowledging and celebrating the richness of cultural differences while promoting equity and fairness for individuals regardless of their cultural heritage, beliefs, practices, or traditions. Culturally inclusive environments embrace diversity, foster cross-cultural understanding and (communicative) skills, and actively promote intercultural interactions and collaborations, thereby creating spaces where everyone can contribute and thrive regardless of their cultural background.
